Sounds of Sousa filled the streets as the Coppell High School Band participated in the Spirit of Coppell parade on Independence Day. With more than 200 band members marching, the patriotic tunes were a highlight of the parade.
“We feel it is so important to be a part of the city of Coppell’s celebration on each 4th of July,” said Scott Mason, CISD Director of Instrumental Music. “This is the 15th year the band has marched in the July 4th parade.”
While many of the students were returning 10th through 12th graders with plenty of marching experience, a sizable amount of the marchers were freshmen. All of the students voluntarily gave up hours of their summer break to participate in the parade.
“Six hours of practice go into preparation for the parade – not including summer sectionals working on music for the parade,” Mason said.
The band resumes marching practice in August as they get ready for the 2013-2014 marching season. At that time, they will practice twice a day for more than three weeks polishing their competition program and preparing for football season.
