The Irving Independent School Board could appoint someone to the vacant seat left by former trustee Norma Gonzales, who resigned this week from the board after being arrested.
The school board could also call for a special election to fill the seat, according to board policy.
Gonzales, 42, stepped down Monday, Aug. 5, just less than three months after being elected. She was arrested Aug. 3 after trying to steal $184 worth of merchandise from Walmart at 1635 Market Place, according to an Irving Police Department report.
Gonzales left the store at about 6 a.m. on Aug. 3 and activated the store's anti-theft alarm. Walmart loss prevention officers tried to stop her, but she drove away in a Dodge Neon. She was later stopped by police in the 7800 block of North MacArthur Drive where police recovered the items from her purse.
