Teaching students to be prepared, Firefighters Jason Reid and Javier Castaneda spent two weeks teaching every 6th grade student in the City of Irving the proper use a fire extinguisher. The 6th grade is an important year, because it is the first year students use science labs. Both the Irving School district and the Irving Fire Department want these students to have as much safety training as possible prior to participating in science labs.
This year, eight middle schools were visited and 2,210 students were taught the fire safety class. This included calling 911, recognizing the type of fire and which fire extinguisher to use, use of the schools fire blanket and finally a hands-on test of the skills they learned.
