Ella Lucille Sublett
Ella Lucille Sublett, of Irving, passed away April 4, 2013. She loved the color pink, cameos, Dr. Peppers, her own delectable peach cobbler, the 60’s & 70’s Dallas Cowboys (she wouldn’t watch after “Roger Dodger” retired), Rambo her American Eskimo, and most of all, her family. Lucille was born September 26, 1914, the second of eight children to Edwin and Blanch Mae (Collett) Bourland in Matador, Texas. She was the epitome of the true Texan woman. In her youth, she could plow a corn field (mule or tractor) straighter than her brothers, and with equal expertise, roll a perm in her beauty shop. She married Charles “Lum” Columbus Sublett, and had 3 children. They moved from Dallas in the late 30’s to Irving where she remained the rest of her life. Lucille ran the bus station in Irving before opening her own beauty salon in 1960. She retired from beauty work in the 80’s, but idleness was not in her nature. She began working at the World Trade Center as a cook, and later utilized her considerable baking and cooking talents as a caterer. She went on to work as a pastry chef for the IISD for 18 years, taking mandatory retirement at age 85. In the last 13 years of her life she enjoyed travelling extensively, gardening, crocheting, taking Silver Sneakers exercise classes, and freelance catering. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Lum Sublett, and her “bestest” friend, Juanita Britain. She is survived by her three children, Charles Sublett, wife Delores, Don Sublett, wife Ellen, and Shirley Sublett Bass. She had five grandchildren, Cindy Sublett Dowdy, Suzanne Sublett Pluta, Freddy Akin, Don Sublett Jr., and Greg Bass. She had eight great grandchildren, Gary Bass, Garth Bass, Garren Bass, Austin Sublett, Justin Sublett, Brenna Manzare, Bree Manzare, Matthew Akin and one great-great grandson, Gauge Bass. Her memorial service was held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Irving where she was a long time member. Rev. Mike Walker performed her service.
