Drawing 76,000 spectators and raising $10 million, the inaugural LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) North Texas Shootout, held April 25-28 at the Las Colinas Country Club, signifies a major step forward in Irving’s attempt to bring high profile sporting events like the HP Byron Nelson and Dallas Tennis Classic to town. The Shootout was not only an economic success, but pulled in some of the biggest names in women’s golf. Out of 144 players, 93 from the top 100 world-ranked players came to Irving for the four day tournament.
Inbee Park, Rolex Rankings No. 1 player worldwide, won the tournament by sinking a four-foot birdie to come 4-under 67, finishing 13-under par, clinching her third win of the season and her sixth career win. The competition was close, however, and Park defeated Spaniard Carlota Ciganda by only 1 stroke.
